Józef Wilkoń

An illustrator, painter, sculptor, creator of posters and stage sets. He was born on February 12th 1930 in Bogucice near Wieliczka. He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (graduated in 1955) and history of art at Jagiellonian University (graduated in 1954 ). He illustrated more than 100 books for children and adults in Poland (including Pan Tadeusz in 1973) and more than 80 books for children abroad. He has received many prizes and distinctions, such as Deutscher Jugendbuchpreis (1964), State Prize for his works for children (1974) and the Prize of the Minister of Culture for career achievement in 2005. In 2010, he was honored with the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and was awarded the Gold Scepter of the Polish Culture Foundation. He has exhibited his works in many galleries and museums in the world – from the Centre Pompidou in 1989 to the Zachęta National Gallery in 2006, where his exhibition drew record audiences. His works are put up in numerous galleries and museums, including The Illustration Museum in Moulin, France, the Illustration Museum in Oshima, Azumino, Koruisaua, Japan and in the Museum of Literature and the National Library in Warsaw. The album edition of The Jungle Book with his illustrations was published in 2009.
